This position performs tax audits on businesses. Employees receive formal and on-the-job training, by assisting higher-level staff conduct audits and independently conducting routine audit assignments. Work involves conducting audits of company financial records and tax returns to determine compliance with Missouri state tax laws. Close supervision is received from a Tax Audit Supervisor or other superior; however, as experience is gained, supervision becomes more general, and the employee exercises increasing independence and initiative in the performance of assignments within established policies and procedures. Qualifications include graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major specialization (24 semester hours) in accounting (One year of professional accounting or auditing experience will substitute for up to six earned credit hours of the required specialization in Accounting).

This position performs Department of Revenue internal audits pertaining to business processes and procedures, objectively reviewing compliance, measuring risk, assessing internal controls, and making recommendations for improvement. Assisting higher-level staff in conducting audits and independently conducting routine audit assignments provides introductory on-the-job training. Work includes statewide audits of contracted Motor Vehicle and Driver’s License Offices to determine compliance with Missouri State awarded contracts. The Auditor I also protects against fraud and theft of Department of Revenue collections and assets, including coordination with Compliance and Investigation Bureau Agents. This position also performs Division of Economic Development statewide tax credit compliance reviews for organizations that have been granted tax credits.
